About Joan

"No mountain is too high for Joan. She finds a way to go over it, around it, through it. Or she just moves it. It's great to watch her work with people, because she is both direct and kind."

Tom Hoch, President and CEO of Hennepin Theatre Trust

Joan Vorderbruggen is the Cultural District Arts Coordinator for Hennepin Theatre Trust. She leads large-scale community projects that transform underused and vacant areas in the West Downtown Minneapolis Cultural District.

Joan accomplishes this by connecting local and international artists with opportunities to bring their art to new and unexpected audiences.

Most recently, Joan was instrumental in bringing a five-story mural of Bob Dylan to life in the heart of downtown Minneapolis. She worked with internationally renowned street artist, Eduardo Kobra, and his team, while also recruiting two Minnesota-based muralists to participate in what has become a major Minnesota destination.

Joan also created and leads Made Here, a unique project that fills vacant and underused public spaces – mostly commercial storefronts – with art by Minnesota-based artists. Now in its fifth iteration, Made Here has become the largest storefront initiative of its kind in the country and has featured works by more than 300 artists in nearly 150 vacant spaces, covering 15 city blocks.

Joan also has been integral in ensuring that Made Here artists represent communities of color and a balanced ratio of male and female visual artists. Made Here continues to grow and provide more opportunities for anyone in the Cultural District to connect with local art and artists in unexpected ways.

Joan is a founding member of the Placemaking Leadership Council and continues to be a visionary source of creative urban revitalization that connects and celebrates diverse cultural landscapes.
